Wilmington, N.C. – UNCW shot a blistering 59 percent in the first half, opened up a big lead and defeated Drexel at Trask Coliseum, 107-87. The Seahawks (4-10, 1-1 CAA) had a balanced scoring attack with three players scoring at least 20 points. Kurk Lee led Drexel with 22 points, while Troy Harper added a season-high 21 points and set the Drexel record for consecutive free throws made with 36. The Dragons are now 0-2 in league play and 6-9 overall.
The Dragons (6-9, 0-2 CAA) found themselves in a big hole for the second straight game. UNCW's offense clicked from the outset. The Seahawks nailed five three pointers in the first half and also took advantage of Drexel fouls. UNCW was 14 for 17 in the first half and scored 57 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Seahawks led at the break, 57-40, and Drexel was never able to cut the lead under 13 points the rest of the night.
Lee was 8-for-12 from the floor and scored more than 20 points for the fourth time this season. He also had four assists and a pair of steals. Harper made his first three free throw attempts in the game. The second one gave him 35 straight makes from the line, which set the Drexel record. The previous mark was 34 straight free throws made. It was held by four players, most recently Frantz Massenat, who accomplished the feat during the 2011-12 season. Alihan Demir added 16 points, which tied his career high. Offense wasn't the problem as the Dragons shot 52 percent from the floor and had a season-best 33 field goals in the game.
Jordon Talley scored 24 points and handed out six assists, both game highs for the Seahawks. Devontae Cacok had another huge game as he scored 23 points on just 9-for-13 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds. He came into the game leading the CAA with more than 13 boards per game.
The Dragons return home where they will play three of their next four games. The stretch begins on Friday night stay when the College of Charleston comes to the Daskalakis Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. tip off.
