Women's Crew Wins Points Title Saturday at George Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON – A victory by the women's varsity eight highlighted four wins by the Drexel rowing team and helped the Dragons to the women's points title Saturday morning at the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
The Dragons' women came away with the team points title at the event with a total of 55 points, five points ahead of second-place George Washington.The women's varsity eight's victory came against Georgetown and Navy. Drexel also got two wins from the women's second varsity eight and one from the men's second varsity eight.
In the early session of racing, which was originally scheduled for Friday before moving to Saturday due to high winds, the Dragons picked up victories from both the women's and men's second varsity eights. Racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, the women's second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:13.00, more than 17 seconds ahead of second-place MIT. The men, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, the Dragons finished in 5:30.90 to hold off Hobart, which finished just under five seconds behind. Also in the early portion of racing, the women's varsity eight finished second, in the Cara Fry boat, to MIT's 5:59.60 with a time of 6:03.00, while the No. 20-ranked men's varsity eight raced to a third-place finish in the Lois Krall II boat with a time of 5:25.10, less than seven seconds behind the winner, Hobart (receiving votes).
The later session featured the women's varsity eight beating second-place Georgetown by two seconds. Drexel's women's second varsity eight also picked up its second win of the day, beating Navy and Georgetown with a time of 6:01.30. The men's second varsity eight crossed the finish line in second with a time of 6:26.00 to Navy's 5:22.00. The Dragons also got second-place times from the women's varsity four, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller, which crossed the line in 6:46.20, as well as the men's third varsity eight, in the Lois Krall, with a time of 5:29.30. The men's varsity eight finished third to No. 16 Navy and Holy Cross (receiving votes) with a time of 5:26.70.
In action back in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River, the Dragons' next set of boats were in action against Navy and Temple. The men's freshmen eight, racing in the Joseph Greipp boat, crossed the finish line at 5:35.37, about half a second behind Navy's fifth varsity eight. The women's third varsity eight, racing in the Maria Papadakis boat, raced to a time of 6:56.02, 25 seconds behind Navy's four-V. The men's fourth varsity eight, racing in the Annette Pennoni, rowed to a 5:55.84 to beat Temple's third varsity eight but finished behind Navy's sixth and seventh varsity eights. The Dragons' women's freshmen eight, which raced in the John Daskalakis, crossed the finished line behind Navy in 7:17.85.
Following this weekend's action, the Dragons will all return to the Schuylkill River as Drexel hosts the 51st annual Kerr Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 15.
