Women's Rowing Wins Sixth Straight Kelly Cup Saturday Morning

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's rowing team won its sixth straight Kelly Cup for the city championship Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in the event hosted by Saint Joseph's. Drexel won five races on the morning. The Dragons' top men's boat finished second to Saint Joseph's for the Bergen Cup.
Drexel's top women's boat took the Kelly Cup for the eighth time in nine years with a time of 6:34.03 to outpace Temple by nearly six seconds in the Cara Fry boat. The Dragons' women's second varsity eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, also rowed to victory, with a time of 6:40.05. Racing to a winning time of 7:14.21 was the Drexel women's varsity four in the S brand new Diane Corle boat.
On the men's side, the freshmen eight put in a sub-six race with a time of 5:52.6 in the Joseph Greipp boat to beat Temple by nearly 3.5 seconds. The men's third varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall shell, also went sub-six, racing to a time of 5:56.9 to beat second-place Saint Joseph's by nearly eight seconds. Drexel's varsity eight, racing in the new Lois Krall II boat, was edged by the host Hawks by two-tenths of a second to be denied the Bergen Cup for the first time in eight years. The Dragons' two-V finished third with a time of 5:51.2 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat seven-tenths of a second behind second-place Temple and three seconds behind winner Saint Joseph's.
Following the morning's racing, the Drexel Rowing program officially dedicated the Cara Fry, the Lois Krall II, the Bella Santorum and the Diane Corle shells at a ceremony at the Bachelor's Barge Club on Boathouse Row. Click here for more.
The Dragons return to the water next weekend when the women row at Eastern Sprints on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond while the come race a dual against Columbia's lightweight at Overpeck Park on Sunday.
