CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – On Wednesday, the opening night of the 2017 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the Drexel women set a school record, CAA record and championship meet record in the 200-yard medley relay from the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va. to take home gold.
It comes as the first swimming relay gold medal for the women's program since joining the CAA. The women currently stand in fifth place of seven teams after night one of four.
Freshman Alexa Kutch, senior Rachel Bernhardt, sophomore April Forsthoffer and senior Claudia Duguay turned in the record time of 1:39.61 in the 200-yard medley relay. The time shaved off over a second and a half from the previous standard set earlier this fall by Drexel. Tonight's time came as a Drexel benchmark along with a CAA Championship record and an overall CAA record. The previous CAA meet record was set back in 2010 by JMU (1:40.34) while the all-time CAA mark was turned in by JMU (1:40.26) in 2013.
The women also took seventh place in the 800-yard freestyle relay to close Wednesday night with a time of 7:29.46. Though off the pace, it also came as a new school record for the Dragons.
Senior Madison Kramer took ninth overall and top in the 'B' final of the women's 3-meter with a score of 282.50.
