Men's Soccer Topped in Heartbreaker at La Salle, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – The breaks did not go the Drexel men's soccer team's way on Tuesday night in North Philadelphia as the Dragons fell at La Salle, 1-0. Drexel could not finish a number of impressive scoring opportunities, and saw the Explorers sneak away with the result on a penalty goal scored in the 88th minute off the foot of Matt Robinson.
The Dragons (0-1-1) outshot La Salle 11-8 overall and had four attempts on goal to just two for the Explorers. Those shots included a pair of looks in the second half off the heads of freshmen Daniel Klemm and Carlos Cuevas that narrowly eluded the goal mouth.
Robinson scored the game's only goal with 2:37 to play when he converted a penalty kick resulting from a Drexel foul just inside the penalty box. It was his second goal of the season – both PKs – as he has accounted for both goals in a pair of 1-0 La Salle victories.
Drexel controlled the action for much of the first half, but was unable to break the ice after 110 scoreless minutes at St. John's on Friday. The Dragons earned four corners, double the total from their whole game against the Red Storm. All four came up empty, however, as did the lone La Salle corner try. Drexel did put up two shots on goal with La Salle unable to put a shot on net, with Colin McGlynn and Tristan Thompson each testing the Explorers' Mike Kirk and finding him up to the challenge.
In the 56th minute, Tyler Afflerbach was tested for the first time on the evening. La Salle's Johnny Ciarlante sent a rocket in to Afflerbach's left. The senior goalkeeper showed no rust, diving and extending his right arm high to deflect the shot over the crossbar.
Three minutes later, Daniel Klemm, the defensive hero last week at St. John's, was the recipient of a well-placed set piece off the toe of McGlynn. Klemm rose up above the defense and connected, but sent his header inches to the left and out of play.
Drexel's last strong chance came in the 81st minute. This time, it was Carlos Cuevas taking the header. His look got past Kirk but ticked off the crossbar. La Salle got a counter out of the play, but Chris Haskins slid in to prevent a possible La Salle breakaway. Seven minutes later, the Explorers made up for that missed opportunity with the penalty conversion to send Drexel back down to University City with the defeat.
The Dragons will wrap up a season-opening three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon when they visit Iona. That contest kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
