Women's Soccer Edged by La Salle in Home Opener, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to La Salle, 3-2, on Thursday evening in a game that came down to the wire. The Explorers scored the game-winning goal with just 1:36 remaining to defeat the Dragons in their home opener and give them their first loss of the season. Shaelyn McCarty and Madison Dunn scored for Drexel in the losing effort.
Drexel got on the board first as McCarty headed the ball into the net in the 26th minute off a corner kick from Kylie Strong. The Dragons held a 1-0 lead through most of the half, but then the Explorers were able to score with 19 seconds remaining in the half as Katherine Hennessy found the rebound of Mary Kate Bateman's shot and was able to put it back for a goal. Drexel and La Salle went into halftime with the score knotted up at 1-1.
In the second half, Dunn put the Dragons in the lead again with a goal in the 60th minute. Vanessa Kara had a break-away run into the box and gave the ball off to Dunn as she pulled the goalie out of the net, which allowed the junior forward to score easily. Seven minutes later, however, the Explorers evened the score again as Maci Bower found a corner kick from Kristin Haugstad and put it into the net.
The score remained tied up until the final minutes of play, but then Deja Davis found the goal with 1:36 remaining to give La Salle the advantage. The Dragons were unable to retaliate in the short time remaining and went on to suffer their first loss of the year.
La Salle outshot Drexel, 14-11, on the contest. Junior goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded six saves on the outing, while the Explorers' Larisa Zambelli tallied four.
The Dragons will return to Vidas Field on Sunday, Aug. 28 as they host Monmouth at 2 p.m.
