Varsity 8 Takes 20th, Crew Closes Year at IRA National Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Drexel Crew closed out its season Sunday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
The Dragons' varsity eight finished 20th overall after a second-place finish in the fourth final on Sunday. Also in action in finals, the freshmen eight took home a fifth overall finish against a limited field of crews, the third varsity eight finished 16th overall, the second varsity eight took 18th and the varsity four took 24th.
Drexel's varsity eight, which entered competition ranked 19th in the country in the final USRowing poll, earned a second-place finish in the fourth final to finish 20th overall. The Dragons, rowing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, rowed to a time of 6:03.050, less than three seconds off of first-place Wisconsin's pace. To get there, Drexel finished fourth in its semifinal to cement a spot in Sunday's fourth final after rowing to a time of 5:45.900, which was nine one-hundredths of a second behind Syracuse for third, which would have vaulted the boat to the third final. In Friday's action, the Dragons finished fifth in their heat with a time of 6:08.120, besting Santa Clara by slightly less than a second. In reps, the Dragons finished third of four with a time of 5:56.900, falling five seconds off of Dartmouth's pace for second.
Drexel's freshmen eight went straight to the grand final in the Joseph Greipp boat, racing against just six boats. The Dragons' freshmen put together a strong race, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:21.150.
Drexel's third varsity eight finished off its final event of the season in the Annette Pennoni boat with a fourth-place finish in the third final to take 16th overall at IRAs. The boat rowed to a time of 6:30.810, just over three seconds faster than fifth-place Hobart. In Friday's action, the Dragons finished with a sixth-place time of 6:35.180 in their heat, followed by a fifth-place time of 6:35.980 in reps.
The second varsity eight also garnered a top-20 finish, taking 18th after crossing the finish line sixth of seven in the third final. Racing in the Lois Krall boat, the Dragons rowed to a time of 6:13.260, three tenths of a second behind Oregon State for fifth. The Dragons took to the Mercer Lake course on Friday and finished with a fifth-place time of 6:28.370 its heat and a fifth-place time of 6:14.860 in reps to get to the third final.
The Dragons' varsity four, racing in the LeBow College of Business boat, finished sixth in the fourth final on Sunday to take 24th overall with a time of 7:04.100, less that a second and a half behind Milwaukee SE for fifth. The Dragons also took sixth in their semifinal with a time of 6:59.330 and sixth of seven with a time of 6:58.410 in its heat on Friday before taking fifth of six with a time of 7:01.610 in its rep.
