Softball Earns a 6-2 Victory Over Rider

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team picked up a 6-2 victory over Rider on Tuesday afternoon. Kimberly Chan went 2-for-3 on the game with an RBI and a run scored.

Rider got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as Kim Valdes hit a two-RBI double with one out. The Dragons would get one back in the bottom of the third as Vanessa Lightfoot singled up the middle to score Jenelle Ladrido from third to cut the Broncs' lead to one run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Drexel tied things up at 2-2 as Erin Okoniewski hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Lara Horwitz to tag up at third and then score. Then in the fifth, Paula Ueno hit another sacrifice fly that would give Drexel a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Drexel extended its lead with three runs off of three hits. Taylor M. Lee led off with a double to left center and then Savanna Johnson singled up the middle to bring Lee across the plate. Chan followed with a double up the middle, which allowed Johnson to advance to third and then score as the Broncs tried to get Chan at second. The Dragons' final run came as Ladrido hit a sacrifice fly to left field that would allow Chan to cross the plate. Drexel would hold on to its lead as Tara Konopka and the Drexel defense got three quick outs in the seventh and walked away with a 6-2 victory.

Konopka picked up her seventh victory of the season with a 10 strike-out performance. She allowed only four hits and two runs in the outing.

With the win, the Dragons improve to 16-18 on the season. Drexel is set to return to the field tomorrow as it will host Philadelphia neighbor St. Joseph's in a single game beginning at 4 p.m.
