BROOKLINE, Mass. – With a 2-0 victory over James Madison in the semifinals on Friday afternoon, the Drexel women's soccer team advances to the CAA Championship game for the first time in program history. The win also marks the Dragons' first-ever postseason victory.
CAA Coach of the Year Ray Goon's squad improved to 9-6-4 overall with Friday's win and will take on the winner of Northeastern and William & Mary in the Championship Finals on Sunday afternoon.
Drexel got on the board for the first time in the 30th minute. Kylie Strong lofted a corner kick into the box that found Kiera Hennessy, who tapped it off a defender and into the net for her second goal of the season. Then with just under three minutes to play in the half, Shaelyn McCarty was awarded a free kick from 24 yards out which she was able to sink into the upper right corner of the net to put the Dragons ahead, 2-0 as they headed into the locker room for halftime.
The Drexel defense would hold the Dukes off throughout the second period. CAA Co-Defender of the Year Christiana Ogunsami made five saves in the last eight minutes of regulation to hold the Dukes off and lead the Dragons onto victory.
The Dragons outshot the Dukes, 15-14. Ogunsami totaled seven saves on the outing, while James Madison keeper Maggie Buxton recorded 10 on the day. The shutout marks Ogunsami's 10th of the season, which ties the Dragons' single-season program record.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they will vie for the league championship. Their opponent will be determined in the second semifinal game between Northeastern and William & Mary, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening.
