HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Colin McGlynn scored his second goal fo the season for the Drexel men's soccer team, but it was not enough as the Dragons fell behind early and could not overcome in a 4-1 defeat at Hofstra on Wednesday night. The loss was the seventh-consecutive defeat for the Dragons, who will now return home to play three straight games at Vidas Field.
McGlynn's goal came in the 73rd minute when Aaron Thompson crossed a ball from the right end line to the goal mouth. McGlynn was there to finish the cross, giving Drexel its first score in 612:32 of game action dating back to a 3-2 overtime victory over Temple on Sept. 13. The goal, however, trimmed Hofstra's lead to 4-1 as the home team had jumped out to a commanding advantage.
Meshack Eshun Addy and Adam Savill each scored in the first half to give the Pride an early 2-0 lead. Hofstra got on the board on a play similar to the one McGlynn would later score on, with a cross coming from the left end line this time for Eshun Addy to finish off at point blank range in the 29th minute. Then in the 43rd minute, Hofstra was able to take advantage of a failed clear by the Dragons to get Savill his first goal of the season.
The Pride added two more goals in just over three mintues early in the second half. Savill netted his second of the year and second of the evening in the 55th minute, followed in the 59th minute by a goal from Luke Brown. Overall, the Dragons were outshot 22-3 as Hofstra controlled play throughout. Drexel senior goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach had five saves to his credit. McGlynn put two shots up, both of which went on net, as Carlos Cuevas added the other shot attempt for the Dragons.
Drexel will return home for its next three games, starting on Saturday afternoon when the Dragons host Elon at 4:00 p.m. Saturday's game will be Alumni Day, with the annual Alumni Game to be played before the Dragons kick off.
