PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Villanova, 1-0 on Friday evening in its season opener at Vidas Field. Freshman Vanessa Kara netted her first career goal to put Drexel ahead at the end of the first half and the Dragons were able to hold on through the remainder of regulation.
The first half was a defensive showcase for both teams as the game remained scoreless into the 44th minute. The Dragons outshot the Wildcats, 6-4 in the first half despite Villanova taking five corner kicks to Drexel's one. Kara's goal came with just 1:35 remaining in the first as she battled into the box and sent a close range shot from the right side over Villanova goalie Emma Meyer's right shoulder. The Dragons would take their 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Drexel offense came out strong in the second half and ultimately tallied 13 shots to the Wildcats' two after halftime. In the 53rd minute, Meyer had her work cut out for her in goal as the Dragons fired four shots in under a minute, three of which were knocked down by the Wildcats' goalkeeper. Drexel would go on to total 19 shots on the night in its first outing of the season.
Goalkeeper Eve Badana opens the season with a 1-0 record in her first start since the 2013 season. Badana, who was sidelined by injury before the start of last season, returned to action and recorded two saves on her way to securing her first shutout of the year. This shutout puts Badana in first place ahead of Kaitlin Bond (2005-2008) on the Drexel Women's Soccer leaderboard for career shutouts with 18. Villanova's Meyer totaled nine saves on the competition.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday, Aug. 23 as they host Buffalo at Vidas Field at 1 p.m.
