Men's Soccer Announces 2015 Schedule

PHILADELPHIA – In just a little over a month, the Drexel men's soccer team will be back in action as the Dragons kick off the 2015 season on August 28 at Rhode Island. The Dragons will be attempting to return to the top of the Colonial Athletic Association standings and earn their third NCAA Tournament bid in four seasons.
The season opens with three straight on the road, including that opener at Rhode Island and visits to Villanova on September 1 and Bowling Green two days later. Drexel's matchup with the Wildcats will be the first of two official Philadelphia Soccer Six contests as the Dragons shoot for their first Soccer Six crown since 2010.
Drexel will play nine games at home at Vidas Field in 2015, opening with one of its marquee matchups. The Washington Huskies will pay the Dragons a visit on September 7, marking the first meeting between the two programs. Washington advanced to the College Cup in 2013 and the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, winning 12 games in 2014. That game will be the start of a three-game homestand for the Dragons with Iona visiting on September 12 and neighboring foe Penn visiting Vidas on September 15.
"We have a solid schedule slated for the fall," head coach Doug Hess remarked. "It will be great to have the chance to host a top Pac-12 team and former Final Four participant in Washington. I am excited about playing them and a few other new opponents as well in Rhode Island and Bowling Green, each of which had fantastic seasons last year." The Rams and Falcons will also be first-time opponents for the Drexel soccer program.
Unlike recent seasons, which saw the Dragons play nearly all their non-conference games before beginning CAA action, this year will see the conference schedule get underway early with a trip to Elon on September 18. Drexel will follow that by hosting Saint Joseph's, the second Philadelphia Soccer Six battle of the year and the first of five non-conference games interspersed in the season's final month-and-a-half. Drexel will also host Columbia on October 6 and visit Loyola (Md.) (October 20), UMBC (October 27) and Princeton (November 3).
Drexel's trip down I-95 to take on UMBC will pit the Dragons against the darlings of last year's College Cup, as the Retrievers made that program's first-ever semifinal run. "We are excited to play a program like UMBC," Hess continued. "They are a mid-major program similar to ourselves and they've had tremendous advances in the past few years, including a run to last year's College Cup."
The Dragons' non-conference schedule should prepare them well for the challenge of CAA competition, where Drexel will attempt to return to the top of the table after regular season crowns in 2012 and 2013. After opening at Elon, the Dragons will also visit James Madison in their second CAA game on September 26. That sets up a closing run of four home games in the final six CAA matchups, including against Hofstra (September 30), the College of Charleston (October 3), William & Mary (October 24) and the CAA season finale against Northeastern on October 31. The Dragons will visit UNCW (October 10) and Delaware (October 14).
