BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Kevin Devoy Jr. became Drexel's first-ever EIWA Champion as he secured the conference title at 133 pounds on Saturday evening. Devoy defeated Lehigh's Mason Beckman, who is ranked 10th in the nation by Intermat, in exciting fashion as he picked up an 8-7 decision after multiple overtime periods.
Devoy wasn't the only Dragon to end the conference tournament on a high note. Matthew Cimato and Noel Blanco each captured third place finishes at 149 and 157 pounds respectively, while David Pearce placed fourth at 141. Zack Fuentes also secured an eighth place finish at 125 in his first EIWA tournament appearance. The Dragons finished in sixth place in the team rankings with 71.5 points behind No. 3 Cornell, No. 8 Lehigh, Bucknell, Columbia, and Penn.
As a result of their strong performances, Devoy, Pearce, Cimato, and Blanco each earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. on March 19-21.
EIWA Champion Devoy started out day two of competition with a 3-2 victory after a last second reversal over Columbia's Angelo Amenta to advance to the title match and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Devoy took on Beckman in the 133 pound finals and sent the match to overtime with the score tied at 5-5. Both wrestlers went scoreless through the sudden victory period, but in the tiebreaker rounds Devoy and Beckman each scored an escape apiece to send a 6-6 match to another sudden victory. Again, neither wrestler was able to score points within the minute period and the match advanced to another round of tiebreakers. Beckman recorded an escape first to take a 7-6 lead, but Devoy was able to tie the match back up at 7-7 before time expired. At the end of the ultimate tiebreaker, Devoy emerged the victor after he was awarded an extra point for his riding time advantage.
Cimato took on the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 149, Christopher Villalonga of Cornell, in his first match Saturday where he lost a 3-1 decision in the tiebreaker round. Despite the loss, Cimato earned a major decision over Lehigh's Drew Longo to advance to the third place match. There he defeated Bucknell's Victor Lopez for the second time in the conference tournament to earn a third place finish and punch his ticket to nationals in St. Louis.
After upsetting returning All-American No. 11 Mitchell Minotti of Lehigh yesterday to advance to competition Saturday, Blanco fell to American's John Boyle in his opening match, 3-2. He went on to defeat Penn's Brooks Martino in the consolation rounds to advance to the third place match, where he was set to face Minotti yet again. Blanco secured a third place finish after defeating Minotti by medical forfeit. He is another of the four Dragons that will be advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
In Pearce's first match on Saturday he fell to Princeton's Jordan Laster, 3-2. In the wrestleback rounds, however, Pearce defeated Jeff Canfora of Penn to advance for a chance at third place. Pearce fell to Bucknell's Tyler Smith in his final match, but walked away with a fourth place finish and a bid to the national tournament.
Zack Fuentes was the fifth Dragon that moved on to competition Saturday. Already in the wrestleback rounds going into the second day of competition, Fuentes fell to Brown's William Watterson in his first match, which put him on track to compete for seventh place. Despite falling to Binghamton's David White in his last match of the tournament, Fuentes earned an eighth place finish in his first appearance at the EIWA Championships.
