Men's Varsity 8 Takes Sixth Overall Sunday at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Drexel Crew sent its men's varsity eight to grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic where it finished sixth overall Sunday on Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif.
 
Drexel raced from lane six in the grand final and finished sixth overall in the race for the Copley Cup. The Dragons crossed the finish line at 6:13.71, just over two seconds behind fifth-place finisher Grand Valley (6:11.35). Cal won the race with a time of 5:53.12.
Drexel's boat went against California and Penn on Saturday morning in Heat, crossing the finish line in third at 6:11.72. Cal won the heat 5:49.68. All three boats in the heat had times fast enough to qualify for Sunday's grand final.
 
Guiding the Lois Krall boat was coxswain Christopher Henderson, followed by strokeDaniel Dollin, 7-seat Mikulas Sum, 6-seat Marko Durica, 5-seat Ivo Krakic, 4-seat Dave Hanrahan, 3-seat Joseph Masgai, 2-seat Daniel Palombo and bow Nicholas Capaldi.
 
Last year, men's crew travelled west to Seattle, Wash. for the Husky Open. The varsity eight and second varsity eight boats each raced twice while on the left coast, seizing one win as the second varsity eight beat Oregon State.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the men's varsity eight was ranked No. 18 in USRowing's preseason poll. The University of Washington led the way with seven first-place votes. Click here for the full men's varsity eight top 20.
Women's crew and the remaining members of men's crew competed in Cherry Hill, N.J. for the Murphy Cup on the Cooper River, winning three total medals. Click here for results.
