The NCAA Administration Cabinet met on Wednesday, Feb. 11 and approved NCAA Committee appointments, including the selection of Drexel University Athletics Director Dr. Eric Zillmer to the Olympic Sports Liaison Committee. The Olympic Sports Liaison Committee facilitates communication and understanding between the NCAA and the USOC, and is composed of 14 members including three student-athletes.
Zillmer, now in his 17th year as Athletics Director at Drexel University, has an international sports background. He lived abroad for 22 years in Europe and Asia, is bilingual in English and German, and has published books in English, Chinese, Czech, Portuguese and Turkish. His sister Eileen "Bibi" Zillmer competed on the 1968 West German Olympic Figure Skating Team in Grenoble, France, and was the second to last torchbearer for the 1972 Munich Summer Games. Zillmer himself competed internationally as a downhill alpine skier in Europe.
At Drexel, Zillmer assisted in securing the winning bid for Drexel Athletics for the 2008 North American Olympic Trials in men's and women's table tennis. Drexel University is also currently the host for the men's and women's U.S. Open Squash, an international competition that includes representatives from over 25 countries.
Zillmer was instrumental in focusing on a global strategy to recruit international student-athletes to Drexel as well as a commitment to international tours for Drexel varsity sports. Drexel Crew has now competed five times at the Henley Regatta in England, including winning the women's elite division race in 2010. Steve Kasprzyk, Drexel alumnus class of 2005, competed in the 2012 London Olympics for Team USA in the eight-oar boat.
"Serving on the Olympic Sports Liaison Committee will allow me to learn more about the value of Olympic competition and training, as well as amateurism rules that govern the Olympic Games," Zillmer said. "I find the Olympics one of the most interesting sporting events, an international festival of sports and peace. I value the Olympic ideals and culture, and it is my intent to bring the ingredients of the Olympic movement back to Drexel Athletics as well as into the Drexel University classroom."
