Men's Soccer Edged By Columbia, 1-0
10/6/2015 9:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team fell to Columbia on Tuesday night at Vidas Field, 1-0. For the Dragons, it was their final non-conference home game of the season. Drexel dropped its second straight game by a 1-0 score after Saturday's loss to the College of Charleston.
Tyler Afflerbach had a pair of saves as the Drexel defense did a good overall job of keeping the Lions (5-3-1) from getting many looks at the net. Columbia had 13 shots, but just three of those went on net. Drexel (2-9-1) managed just seven shots, two of which tested Columbia goalkeeper Kyle Jackson. Tristan Thompson had three shots to lead the Dragons, while he and Chris Haskins put shots on net.
The Lions controlled possession for the bulk of the first half, but could do little with it. Columbia got off six shots to three for the Dragons, but was unable to put one on goal to test Drexel goalkeeper Afflerbach. Thompson fired an early shot on goal for the Dragons, but Columbia's Kyle Jackson hauled it in for the lone save by either side in the first half. Columbia did manage five first-half corners, but could not convert.
The second half continued in much the same way, with neither team able to put up a strong scoring opportunity until Columbia broke through in the 77th minute. Andrew Tinari dribbled up the middle drifting in and out of defenders and into the box along the ride side. Having worked his way inside, Tinari passed it off to Bryce Terrill, positioned at the back post to Afflerbach's right. The pass found its way to Terrill's left foot, which chipped it up and in for the game's lone goal.
Drexel turned up the pressure in the closing minutes, but could not get much going offensively as the Lions were able to win possession often as the Dragons tried to feed it inside. Drexel was also called for seven fouls in the final 13 minutes as the Dragons tried to force tempo.
The Dragons will resume Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday when they hit the road to take on UNCW. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. and will begin a three-game road swing, including games at Delaware and Loyola (Md.).
