PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team fell behind early on Saturday and could not overcome a pair of early William & Mary goals as the Dragons dropped their seventh straight, 3-0. The loss eliminated the Dragons from a possible Colonial Athletic Association Tournament berth.
Drexel (2-13-1) was outshot 21-11 on the day, and managed just three shots on goal. Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach faced significant pressure from the Tribe attack and came up with seven impressive saves.
William & Mary got on the board early, scoring just over seven minutes into the game when Marcel Berry drove into the box from the left side, cutting across to the right and drawing Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach out. Berry then cut inside and poked the ball past Afflerbach to put the Tribe up 1-0.
In the 35th minute, William & Mary doubled its lead when Jackson Eskay gathered the ball in the middle of the box and faked a shot, freezing the Drexel defense and opening up the far post for him. His low curling shot snuck in just inside the post for the score.
Drexel was outshot 12-5 overall in the first half. The Dragons' only shot on goal in the period came in the waning seconds when Jameson Detweiler boomed a long ball into the box where William & Mary keeper Mac Phillips had to play it.
William & Mary added an insurance goal early in the second half when Eskay powered in his second of the game and sixth of the season. He dribbled into the box, then rifled a high rising shot over the outstretched arms of Afflerbach and just under the crossbar.
Drexel was unable to get anything going offensively, though they did have some good looks in the closing minutes. Francisco Rodrigues da Palma had perhaps the best look when his shot went just off the outside of the net. Connor Ryan also put one inches above the crossbar.
The Dragons will still have three games to play despite the elimination from postseason contention. Drexel will be back in action on Tuesday when the Dragons visit UMBC just outside of Baltimore at 7:00 p.m. The home season will conclude next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when Drexel hosts Northeastern on Senior Day. The regular season wraps up the following Tuesday, November 3, at Princeton.
