NEWARK, Del. – The Drexel men's soccer team fell behind early and could not make up the deficit on Wednesday as the Dragons fell at Delaware, 5-1. Drexel was defeated for the fifth-straight game and is still in search of its second Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season.
Colin McGlynn scored his team-high fourth goal of the season for the Dragons (2-11-1, 1-5-0), trimming a three-goal Delaware lead early in the second half to two, but Drexel could not get anything else going offensively and the Blue Hens added two late goals to provide the final margin.
Delaware scored a pair of goals midway through the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Ryan Talbot netted his first of the season in the 24th minute, followed eight minutes later by Thibault Philippe's first tally of the year. After halftime, the Blue Hens made it a three-goal game in the 53 rd minute when Thomas de Villardi posted a goal, also his first.
In the 61 st minute, McGlynn got the Dragons on the board. He did so from close range, beating Delaware goalkeeper Todd Morton from the left on a shot just five yards out. McGlynn's fourth goal leads the Dragons and continues a breakout season for the sophomore who had just one career goal coming into the year.
Delaware would not let the Dragons back in it after McGlynn's goal got them on the board. The Blue Hens held Drexel to just five shots on the night, and just two after McGlynn's goal, both in the 88th minute or later. Meanwhile, Delaware scored twice in the final three minutes of play to seal the victory, its second in CAA play.
Drexel will now have nearly a week off before its next game and a week-and-a-half between conference games. The Dragons will be back on the field next Tuesday when they visit Loyola (Md.) at 7:00 p.m. They will play their next CAA game the following Saturday, October 24, hosting William & Mary at 4:00 p.m.
