Dragons Pick up Road Win at Towson, 55-41
1/8/2015 8:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Towson, Md. — Freddie Wilson scored 13 of his season-high 14 points in the second half as Drexel snapped its seven game losing streak with a convincing 55-41 win at Towson. The Dragons tied a school record by committing just three turnovers.
Drexel (3-11, 1-2 CAA) played one of its best games of the season, controlling the pace of the game and competing on the glass with the best rebounding team in the conference. Towson (8-8, 1-2) came into the game with a rebounding margin of 9.9 per game, but grabbed just three more rebounds against the undermanned Dragons.
The Dragons scored the first four points of the second half, two on a Wilson jumper then two more on a Wilson lay-up, to break a 22-22 tie. The Dragons didn't trail the rest of the game. Towson hung around and stayed close for most of the second half. With Towson down five, Drexel put the game away when Damion Lee nailed a three-pointer followed by a Sammy Mojica steal which set up a Lee dunk. That made the score 49-39 and forced the Tigers into calling a timeout. Drexel then scored the next six points before the Tigers scored in the closing seconds to make the final 55-41.
Wilson played 29 minutes as Rashann London was saddled with foul trouble. The senior was 8-for-12 from the line and had three steals. Lee was guarded closely throughout the night, but still managed 16 points and seven rebounds. He moved into 19th on Drexel's career scoring list with 1,240 points. Tavon Allen chipped in with 10. The junior didn't have one of his better games from the floor, but made two key buckets and played well defensively on Towson's Four McGlynn. The Tigers' top scorer was held to just four points.
John Davis and Walter Foster each had 10 points to lead the Tigers. Drexel's defense held Towson to just 37 percent shooting and forced the Tigers into 11 turnovers. The Dragons scored 13 points off those turnovers, while Towson did not convert any of Drexel's miscues into baskets.
The Dragons conclude their brief two-game trip on Saturday night. Drexel will play at UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. All the action can be heard on Drexeldragons.com.
