Lee's 33 Points Propel Dragons Past Northeastern, 65-60
1/28/2015 9:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia – Damion Lee poured in a season-high 33 points as Drexel rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat Northeastern, 65-60. The Huskies (14-8, 6-3 CAA) entered the game tied for first in the Colonial Athletic Association. Lee made 10 straight free throws in the final 45 seconds as the Dragons (6-14, 4-5 CAA) won for the second straight game.
Drexel began its comeback in the early portion of the second half. With Northeastern ahead 35-30, Sammy Mojica nailed a three-pointer and followed that with a tip-in off a Rashann London miss. Lee made it an 8-0 run with a three-pointer as Drexel took its first lead of the second half at 38-35. Northeastern tied it up, but Drexel went ahead for good at the 8:28 mark. Tavon Allen's jumper put the Dragons ahead 42-40. They would lead the rest of the way. The Dragons defense held the Huskies without a field goal for a stretch of 6:28 as they extended the lead to as many as eight points. Northeastern was forced to foul late to try and get back in the game. At first, it looked as though it may work as both Mojica and London made just one of two from the line. However, the Dragons then were able to get the ball in continuously to Lee, who calmly sank his free throws down the stretch.
Lee finished 12-for-12 from the line. It was the third time this season that Lee was perfect in 10 or more attempts. He has now made 42 of his last 43 free throw attempts. The junior was 9-for-16 from the field, drained three three-pointers and moved into 15th on Drexel's career scoring list with 1,384 points. Mojica was the only other Dragon in double figures with 10 points. Rodney Williams came off the bench for the Dragons in his return from a foot injury. Williams had four points and four rebounds in his first appearance since Dec. 28. Tyshawn Myles led the team with seven rebounds and three blocks.
T.J. Williams led Northeastern with 16 points, 14 of those coming in the second half. Zach Stahl scored 14 points, while David Walker added 10 points. The Huskies shot 46 percent from the floor, but just 38 percent in the second half. They committed 14 turnovers in the game which led to 14 Drexel points.
The Dragons took care of the ball in the second half, playing the final frame without committing a turnover. They also shot 44 percent in the second half after making just 8-for-25 in the first half, when they fell behind by as many as 12 points before Mojica's put-back jumper at the buzzer made it a 10-point game.
The Dragons conclude their homestand on Saturday afternoon when UNCW comes to the DAC. The teams tip-off at 4 p.m.
