9/14/2014 2:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Philadelphia, Pa. - After two overtimes, the Drexel women's soccer team tied Syracuse, 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. Lauren Stollar scored both goals for the Dragons, both coming within a three minute period in the second half.
Syracuse struck first in the 23rd minute, as Jessica Vigna found the lower left corner of the goal. The Orange increased their lead eight minutes later as Vigna found Maya Pitts, who put the ball past Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye and into the net.
The Dragons would go into halftime trailing the Orange, 2-0. In the second half, however, Drexel came out ready to retaliate. Less than five minutes after halftime Megan Hammaker sent a corner kick into the box to find Stollar, who kicked it into the lower left corner of the goal. Two minutes later, Stollar got past a Syracuse defender and found the net again to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams had a multitude of opportunities to score before the end of regulation, but the game remained tied as the clock wound down to zero. At the start of the first overtime, Syracuse had a corner kick opportunity and was able to get off two quick shots but to no avail. Fye made two crucial saves in the first overtime period to keep the Dragons in the game.
Hammaker made a last minute attempt with less than a minute to go but it went high, which sent the two teams to their second overtime. Syracuse again came out with two quick shots at the beginning of the period, but the first was pulled down by Fye and the other went just wide of the goal. With just over two minutes to go, Syracuse's Stephanie Skilton sent one towards the goal but it went high. Despite multiple efforts by both teams, the competition ended in a draw.
The tie moves Drexel to 1-5-1, while Syracuse moves to 3-2-3. Overall the Orange outshot the Dragons, 19-13. Fye recorded a career-high 12 saves, while Syracuse's MacKenzie Moranz tallied five.
The Dragons return home on Friday evening to host George Washington at Vidas Field starting at 7:00 p.m.
