PHILADELPHIA – Drexel junior golfer Christopher Crawford placed third at the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifying tournament at Stonewall in Elverson, Pa. to qualify for the prestigious and historic amateur tournament in August.
By qualifying this year for the U.S. Amateur, Crawford has now qualified in each of the past two years and three of the last four. Up for grabs in the Stonewall qualifier were six automatic bids to the U.S. Amateur and two alternate positions.
Crawford shot a combined two-round score of 139 to finish one under par. In round one, competitors played the Old Course, where Crawford shot a two-over 72. Crawford bounced back in the second round at Stonewall's North Course, shooting a three-under 67.
The 2014 U.S. Amateur will be played at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga., beginning on Aug. 11 and running through Aug. 17. Founded in 1898, Atlanta Athletic Club has hosted five previous USGA national championships including the 1976 U.S. Open.
The U.S. Amateur is widely considered one of the most grueling tournaments on golf's annual scheduling. Golfers begin with two days of stroke play with the top 64 moving on to a knockout-style match play tournament.
