FULL SCHEDULE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team begins its quest for a third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in just a little more than a month, as head coach Doug Hess and the Dragons unveiled their 2014 schedule this week. The Dragons will take on five other participants in last year's NCAA Tournament including three that will be Colonial Athletic Association foes this season.
Drexel begins its year with a strong local flavor, playing Philadelphia Soccer Six rivals in four of the first five games of the season. The Dragons open play on August 29 at Temple, the fourth meeting in the last five years for the two teams. Four days later, Drexel plays its home opener against Villanova in the Dragons' first official Soccer Six match of the season.
A visit to Penn follows the Villanova tilt as the Dragons and Quakers will battle for bragging rights in University City. The two sides were the lone representatives of the City of Brotherly Love in last year's NCAA Tournament, following a roller coaster 3-2 Penn victory during the regular season. After the Dragons welcome Loyola to Vidas Field on September 10, they will visit Saint Joseph's for their final official Soccer Six match of the year on September 13. That game will be the first regular season meeting of the two schools since a 4-1 Drexel victory in 2009.
Although the Dragons will not leave Philadelphia for the first five games of 2014, they will makeup for lost travel mileage over the weekend of September 19-21 as they take part in the University of New Mexico's TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational. Drexel will battle the host Lobos on the 19th, followed by a matchup with Cal State Bakersfield on the 21st. New Mexico was a national semifinalist last season. Former CAA foe VCU will also take part in the event.
Drexel will return to the area to complete its non-conference schedule with three games against teams from New Jersey. Home tilts against Princeton and Seton Hall will be sandwiched around a visit to Fairleigh Dickinson on September 27.
The Dragons have won the last two CAA regular season titles, and will begin their search for a third-straight league crown on October 4 in a rematch of last year's conference championship game. Drexel outlasted William & Mary 1-0 in that game and now has won three straight against the Tribe. The Dragons will visit Williamsburg for the conference opener this season. They will stay on the road for their next match, a visit to Northeastern on October 8.
Drexel's conference home opener comes on October 11 as the College of Charleston makes its first-ever visit to Vidas Field. The Dragons defeated the Cougars 2-1 in Charleston last year to clinch the regular season crown. James Madison will follow Charleston into University City on October 15.
The last road trip of the regular season begins with the first-ever meeting between the Dragons and Elon, the newest member of the CAA. The teams will get together in North Carolina on October 18, followed four days later by Drexel's visit to Hofstra. The Dragons will then return home to take on Delaware on October 29 and UNCW on November 1. Senior Day will be celebrated prior to the game against the Seahawks.
The Dragons have hosted the CAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons as the league's No. 1 seed. This year, the top seed will again host the semifinals and championship game on November 13-15. That will be preceded by first-round matchups at the home of the higher seeded teams on November 8.
