Men's Crew Concludes Season at the IRA National Championships

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel men's crew concluded their 2013-14 season at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. from Friday, May 30 to Sunday, June 1. Paul Savell, Director of Rowing, guided the team to victories at the Kerr Cup and Bergen Cup as well as a second consecutive team championship at the Dad Vail Regatta.
The Dragons finished in 19th overall after qualifiying for IRAs as a team and competing with six boats. The varsity eight finished 20th overall, second varsity eight finished 17th, freshmen eight finished 10th, third varsity finished 18th, varsity four finished 13th and the varsity lightweight four finished 11th.
The varsity eight led off on Friday with Drexel in lane six of heat two in the Lois Krall boat where they finished in fifth place with a time of 5:55.889. In the afternoon reps, the Dragons placed third with a time of 5:51.025. They raced in the semifinal on Saturday morning in lane five, finishing in fourth and crossing the finish line at the 6:23.370 mark. They raced from lane three in the fourth final, finishing second (20th overall) after a photo finish with third-place Gonzaga at the 5:55.050 mark.
Next up on Friday was the second varsity eight with Drexel in lane one in the Annette Pennoni boat, and the Dragons finished in fifth place with a time of 6:03.598. In the Friday afternoon reps, Drexel finished in second place with a time of 5:49.939 to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, the Dragons used a time of 6:19.170 to finish in third, falling just half a second short of second place and advance to the third final on Sunday. In the third final, Drexel followed up their Dad Vail gold medal with a fifth place finish (17th overall) and a time of 5:55.122.
Drexel's freshmen eight began on Friday in lane one in the Joseph Greipp boat, finishing in sixth place, crossing the finish line at 6:22.081. Freshmen eight raced in reps on Saturday morning in lane one, finishing in fifth place with a time of 6:31.692. The Dragons raced from lane one in the petite final, finishing in fourth place (10th overall), 1.4 seconds short of third, with a time of 6:15.686.
The third varsity eight took to lane six on Friday in the Peggy Greenawalt boat and finished at 6:47.648 in sixth place. In the reps on Friday afternoon, Drexel finished in sixth place with a time of 6:18.831, which unfortunately fell short of qualifying for the semifinals. However, they raced from lane one in the third final on Sunday, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:29.309 for sixth place (18th overall).
Rounding out Drexel's Friday races, the varsity four took to lane two in the LeBow College of Business boat and finished in fifth place, crossing the finish line at 6:55.831. In the reps on Friday afternoon, the Dragons finished in fifth place again a 6:41.501, three seconds short of qualifying for the semifinals. Drexel, however, did race in the third final on Sunday in lane five, winning with a time of 6:45.576, nearly two seconds ahead of Penn, for 13th overall..
Drexel's varsity lightweight four began competition on Sunday when they took to lane six in the Tobey and Kim Oxholm boat and finished in sixth with a time of 7:14.845. In the petite final later in the morning, the Dragons finished in fifth (11th overall) with a time of 7:08.135.
