Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel senior Ben McIntosh has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year. The award was voted on by the league's head coaches. McIntosh was one of five Dragons named to the CAA's First Team. Joining McIntosh on the First Team are Ryan Belka, Matt Dusek, Nick Saputo and Nick Trizano.
McIntosh ended the regular season with 38 goals. His 2.71 goals per game lead the CAA and are the most of any midfielder in the nation. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native is tied for 11th on the school's all-time goals list with 90.
Belka, a junior midfielder has 19 goals and 13 assists this season. He is a First Team selection for the second-straight year. Belka, who is from Crofton, Md., is just two points shy of reaching 100 in his career.
Dusek earned First Team honors for the first time. The senior defenseman from Monkton, Md. is second in the CAA in caused turnovers. He is one of the big reasons the Drexel defense is allowing almost one goal less a game than it did a year ago.
Saputo has had an outstanding year at the face-off "x". The junior is ranked seventh in the nation in face-off percentage at .631. The Huntington, N.Y. product is also seventh in all of Division I in ground balls per game (9.29).
Trizano, now a senior, has saved his best season for his final year in University City. The attackman from Eastchester, N.Y., is third in the CAA in goals per game and has 32 goals, 13 assists and 45 points. He enters the postseason with 112 career points.
Drexel freshmen Cole Shafer and Markell Nelson were named to the CAA'[s All-Rookie Team. Shafer is among the league leaders in points, while Nelson is a long-stick middie who plays on the wing on the Dragons' face-off unit.
The Dragons ended the regular season with a 10-4 overall record and a 4-1 mark in CAA play. Drexel will play Towson today at noon in the CAA semifinals at Vidas Field. The winner will play at Hofstra on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
