AUDUBON, Pa. – Drexel men's soccer Hall of Famer Robert Linde ('51) passed away on February 16 at the age of 80. Linde was the co-captain and starting center forward for the Drexel men's soccer team for four seasons, and was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.
Linde was a member of the first-ever varsity soccer team at Drexel in 1947. As a senior in 1950, he was named an All-American after scoring 17 goals in just nine games. That led the nation that season, and earned him his second of two Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest All-Star distinctions. Linde led the team in scoring in each of his four seasons, and finished with 39 goals. He remains in the Drexel men's soccer top 10 all-time in goals (39) and points (78).
Prior to his arrival on campus, Linde served in World War II in the Army Air Force, stationed in England as an Air Transport Technician. Linde, a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity, graduated in 1951 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He went on to work as a Superintendent/Engineer at Philadelphia Gas Works, from which he retired in 1986.
Linde is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Donaldson Linde of Audubon, as well as his daughter Barbara Linde Wilchek (John) of Macungie, son David S. Linde (Mary Beth) of Elizabethtown, grandchildren Lauren M. Wilchek, John W. Wilchek, III and Katherine Wilchek Quraishi. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth Forrest and brother David Madden.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family with internment at West Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Linde's memory would be appreciated.
