Hampton, Va. - The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader with Hampton on Monday to conclude competition at the Lady Pirate Classic. The Dragons fell to the Pirates in Game 1, 5-4, but then defeated the tournament host in Game 2, 5-3.
In the first game of the day, junior Leticia Matsuoka went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while pitcher Tara Konopka tossed six innings and four strikeouts in the losing effort. The game remained scoreless until the third inning, when Hampton put up one run on a double to left field. The Pirates struck again in the bottom of the fourth, adding four more runs to take a 5-0 lead.
The Dragons tried to stage a comeback in the top of the seventh. Ashley Panetta doubled to lead off the inning and Karli Boyer followed by drawing a walk. Both players advanced on a passed ball and Jennie Himler walked to load the bases. Pirates' pitcher Jailynn Jackson came on in relief, but walked Baeley Reed to bring in the Dragons' first run of the day. Matsuoka came up next and singled up the middle to drive in two more runs and Sylvia Llamas added another RBI single later in the inning, but the Dragons came up just short, falling to the Pirates 5-4.
Drexel fared better in the second game, as Boyer went 3-for-3 and Reed tallied three hits in four appearances. Hampton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Dragons added three of their own by way of a Boyer RBI single and a Liana Newton 2-RBI double in the top of the third to tie up the game.
Two innings later, Drexel would add another two runs as Shelby Taylor homered to leftfield with a runner on base, giving the Dragons a 5-3 lead. Drexel would hold onto this advantage through the sixth and seventh to pick up their fourth win of the season.
The Dragons will return to action on Friday, March 14 as they close out their tournament schedule at the UMBC Dawg Pound Classic. Friday's games are scheduled for 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Drexel will also play at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday and at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
