PHILADELPHIA - Billy Englishby, who spent seven years as an assistant men's soccer coach at Campbell University, will be reunited with Drexel men's soccer head coach Doug Hess as he joins Hess' staff for the 2014 season. Englishby played and coached under Hess when the current Dragons' head man was at Campbell from 2002-09.
"I am excited about working with Billy once again," Hess remarked while making the announement. "He is a quality coach that has only bettered himself in the last several years. He has done such a good job at Campbell, as well as with his youth teams. I know he will bring a new energy and freshness to our program. We look forward to Billy and his wife, Grace, being a part of things here at Drexel."
Englishby led the Camels to a 67-55-13 overall record during his seven years at the school. Three times, Campbell finished ranked among the top-10 in their final NSCAA region poll. Campbell also earned the school's first-ever year-end national ranking (No. 25) under Hess and Englishby in 2008. The pair also brought Campbell to the NCAA Tournament for the first time the previous season.
Under Englishby's watchful eye, the Camels won three Atlantic Sun regular season titles, including the first-ever perfect league season (9-0) in conference history. Campbell sent three players to Major League Soccer, and had 22 All-Conference players, two Atlantic Sun Players of the Year, and two All-Americans. Three times, the Camels earned NSCAA Team Academic Awards during Englishby's tenure.
A goalkeeper during his playing career at Campbell, Englishby started 44 games during his three-year career. He remains among the school's all-time leaders in saves with 201.
For the past seven years, Englishby has also served as North Carolina's Olympic Development Program head coach. He is the only collegiate assistant coach to earn a head coaching spot within the Olympic Development Program. Englishby has also led several club teams, most recently the Triangle United Gold '95 Boys team, based in Chapel Hill, for the past three seasons. That team claimed a berth in the national champions by winning the USYS Region III championship.
"I am very excited to join the coaching staff at Drexel University," Englishby commented. "The program has made huge strides in just a short time, and I am looking forward to working with Doug again, the rest of the staff, and the players."
Englishby takes the place of Drexel Associate Head Coach Bryan Green. Green, who spent four years with the Dragons and helped lead them to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013, was recently named the head coach of the Belmont University men's soccer program.
