Men's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw with College of Charleston

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team earned its first Colonial Athletic Association point of the season on Saturday, playing to a 2-2 draw with the College of Charleston on Alumni Day. It was nearly the Dragons' first conference victory of the season, but the Cougars scored with just 19 seconds remaining in the second half to deadlock the game. Robert Liberatore and John Grosh scored for Drexel.
Charleston (2-7-2, 0-2-1) got on the board first. In the 33rd minute, the Dragons tried to clear the ball out of their defensive area, but were unsuccessful. As Charleston kept the ball in the zone, Kye West got control in the box on the left side and tapped a centering pass to point blank range in the center of the net. In streaked Adan Noel, who finished it off for the game's first goal.
The Dragons responded just eight minutes later. After earning a corner, the Dragons turned to Grosh to insert it. He fed it perfectly into the middle, but no one was able to get good contact on it. The ball trickled towards the back post, where Liberatore slid in and poked it past the Charleston defense for the equalizer.
After halftime, Drexel quickly got the lead in the 52nd minute. Again, Grosh was in the middle of it. This time, Sander Yu fed a long low pass into Grosh cutting up the right side. Grosh kept the ball low, skidding it along the ground inside the back post and out of the reach of Charleston goalkeeper Alex Young.
The Cougars looked defeated until a frenetic and chaotic sequence late in the 90th minute. A corner kick was put into play, but again no one was able to make good contact for Charleston. Drexel tried to poke it out, but the scrum of Charleston players prevented that. Finally, Noel got a toe on it and chipped it into the right corner where no one was to even the score with 19 seconds to play.
Neither team was able to get much going in overtime, though both had looks. In a steady drizzle, the teams played out the extra 20 minutes and each earned a point.
The Dragons will return to action, back at Vidas Field, on Wednesday. In search of their first CAA victory, the Dragons will host James Madison at 7:00 p.m.
