Dragons Race to Top Three Finishes Saturday at Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew returned home to Philadelphia for its first race of the season on the Schuylkill River on Saturday when they competed at the Navy Day Regatta. The Dragons' women's first and second varsity eights each recorded top three finishes.
The men's freshmen eight "A" and "B" boats began the Dragons' day with the "A" finishing in fourth with a time of 13:29.98 in the Vince Vidas boat. The men's "B" boat finished close behind in fifth with a time of 13:39.56 in the Peggy Greenwalt boat. Penn won with a time of 12:54.54.
Drexel's women's freshmen eight followed the men's racing, finishing seventh with a time of 17:12.85 in the John Daskalakis boat. Penn won with a time of 15:22.76.
The men's second varsity eight "A" and "B" boats took to the water in the Joseph Greipp and Annette Pennoni boats, respectively. The "A" finished fifth, crossing the finish line in 13:20.53, while the "B" came in tenth at the 13:52.56 mark. Penn "A" took the win with a 12:39.05 time.
The women's second varsity eight followed with the "A" in the Maria Papadakis boat finishing in second place with a time of 15:16.98 for the Dragons' best finish of the day. Drexel's "B" boat was in the Marlene Buckley boat and finished with a time of 16:56.33. Navy paced the competition with a 14:52.38 time.
Drexel's varsity eights concluded the team's day with the men racing first. The men's "A" raced in the new Sandra Lee Sheller II for the first time, finishing fourth with a time of 12:28.87, while the "B" raced in the Lois Krall boat to a 12:48.15 time for eighth. Penn narrowly edged Navy by less than one-hundredth of a second for first with a time of 12:11.81.
The women's varsity eight finished out the day's racing, finishing in third with a time of 14:20.33 in the Marlene Buckley II boat. Navy took the top spot with a 14:03.30 time.
At the Navy Day Regatta, Drexel debuted its newest boat, the Sandra Lee Sheller II, which was used by the men's varsity eight "A."
Drexel Crew returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 for the 50th racing of the historic Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass.
