Men's Soccer Reveals Slate for 2013

PHILADELPHIA - Coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1972, the Drexel men's soccer team will have a challenging schedule ahead of them in 2013. The Dragons, who were the Colonial Athletic Association regular season champions last year, will look to repeat their title in the new-look CAA.
Before the Dragons get to that part of the schedule, however, they will be faced with a difficult non-conference slate. They kick things off with Fairleigh Dickinson, a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament. The Knights visit Vidas Field on August 30. From there, the Dragons will visit Seton Hall on September 1 before returning home for the University City Classic, September 6-8 against Sacred Heart and Stony Brook.
A visit to Lehigh on September 12 precedes Drexel's first Philadelphia Soccer Six battle of the year, a home date with La Salle on September 17. Last season, the Dragons fell in a wild game at La Salle, 3-2, before defeating Penn for the first time in 20 years to split their Soccer Six games. Drexel visits Penn on October 2 this season. The Dragons will also host Temple on October 5 in a match that does not count towards the Soccer Six standings.
Before those games, however, the Dragons will host Rutgers on September 24. The two teams last played in 2011 with the Scarlet Knights winning a 3-1 decision on their way to an NCAA Tournament bid. Drexel is 6-5-1 all-time against Rutgers.
Colonial Athletic Association play begins on September 28 when the Dragons host William & Mary at 4:00 p.m. The Dragons' 3-0 win at Williamsburg last season was just their second win in 13 tries against the Tribe.
After facing Penn and Temple, the Dragons visit Princeton on October 8 before beginning CAA play in earnest. With the league holding a seven-game schedule this season, the Dragons will play just three games at home, including the opener against William & Mary. The next game will also be at home on October 12 against Northeastern, the only team to defeat the Dragons in league play last season. After that, Drexel will hit the road for its next four contests before returning home for Senior Night on October 30 against Hofstra.
In the midst of that road trip, which will take the Dragons to UNCW, Delaware and James Madison, will come Drexel's final non-conference match of the season as they visit Maryland on October 22. The Terps have arguably been the most successful collegiate soccer program in the nation during this century, with six College Cup Final Four appearances and national titles in 2005 and 2008. Maryland made it to the semis last season before being bested in penalty kicks by Georgetown. They have made the NCAA Tournament field every season since 2000.
After hosting Hofstra for Senior Night, the Dragons will wrap up their regular season on November 6 when they visit the newest member of the CAA, the College of Charleston. The CAA Championships will follow, with the first round set for November 9 and the championship game scheduled for November 16. The winner of the CAA will earn an automatic bid to this year's NCAA Tournament.
