PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team is among the Dragon squads that have returned to campus this week to begin summer training and classes, and joining the reigning Women's National Invitation Tournament champions are three newcomers who will suit up for Drexel for the first time in the 2013-14 season. Sarah Curran, Florence Ouattara and Alexis Smith will make their Drexel debuts this fall when basketball season gets underway.
Sarah Curran becomes the latest in a long line of Dragons who graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School. She will join former Carroll teammates Meghan Creighton and Rachel Pearson, and help fill the void left by the graduation of another former Carroll standout, Hollie Mershon. Curran played four years of varsity basketball for the Patriots. The 5'11" Curran saw time as the team's center, power forward and small forward, helping lead them to two Philadelphia Catholic League championships in 2010 and 2012. As a junior in 2012, Curran joined forces with Creighton and Pearson to lead the Patriots to a Pennsylvania state championship. That year, she was the MVP of the Catholic League. She was also named First Team All-Delco and First Team All-State. Carroll won three district championships (2010-12) with Curran on the floor. Sarah is the daughter of Tammie and Chris Curran, and intends to major in business.
Florence Ouattara will come to the Dragons from the Ivory Coast, by way of Burlington, N.J. The first Drexel player ever to hail from the Ivory Coast, Ouattara moved to New Jersey midway through her high school career, spending her final two prep seasons at the Life Center Academy in Burlington. There, she was an attacker on the soccer team in addition to serving as a point guard and shooting guard for the basketball team. Last season, Ouattara helped Life Center go 28-3 on the year, earning a No. 3 overall ranking in the state and a top-100 ranking in the country. She appeared in 26 games, averaging nearly five points per game during her senior season. The daughter of Therese Ouattara Niederberger. Ouattara is currently undecided on a major.
Alexis Smith graduated from Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Md. A native of nearby Lusby, Md., Smith was a four-year letterwinner at Calvert, playing every position on the court except center. She also ran track for three years, specializing in sprint relays and the triple and long jumps. With the basketball team at Calvert, Smith won three Maryland state championships (2011-13), and was a First Team All-SMAC selection in each of her four seasons. After three years on the Washington Post All-Met Second Team, Smith made the jump to the First Team in 2013. Smith leaves Calvert with the school record for all-time points scored, holding the record for all basketball players in both the boys' and girls' programs. The daughter of Shinnell Posey and Rodney Smith, Alexis intends to major in criminal justice.
