Philadelphia – Drexel University's men's and women's crew programs are counting down the days until the 75th annual Dad Vail Regatta, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, starting on Friday, May 10 through May 11. The Dragons have had a successful spring leading up to the nation's most celebrated regatta that will feature top crews from North America as well as Canada.
Over the last four years, the Director of Rowing Paul Savell has sent 20 boats to the grand finals including five gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medal finishes. Dating back to 1958, Drexel University has captured 11 gold medals, seven silver medals and 14 bronze medals.
The Dragons' first Dad Vail Regatta medal was won by the 1962 men's second varsity eight boat. The second varsity won a bronze medal, followed by another third place finish from the men's novice eight boat two years later in 1964. The 1972 men's varsity four was the first Drexel boat to earn a gold medal. Since then, Drexel has continued to make its mark at the Dad Vail Regatta.
Last year, Drexel placed second overall with 35 total points and finished just two-points shy of knocking off Purdue for first-place. The women's novice eight and women's second varsity eight both won gold medals, which marks the first gold medal victories ever for the women's program. The men's novice eight captured a silver medal for the third straight year, while the men's varsity eight took home a bronze medal in the finals.
Drexel Crew has had two boats win back-to-back medals at the 2010 and 2011 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. Former men's pair, Liam O'Neill and bow Peter Schmidt, earned two gold medals, while the men's novice eight also won two consecutive silver medals.
The women's crew team won its first medal in 1998. The women's second varsity eight boat placed third in the grand finals and took home a bronze medal. In 2005, the women's varsity eight boat secured another bronze medal for the Dragons.
Five years later, the women's varsity eight won a bronze medal. The women continued their success and stunned the world by winning the 2010 Henley Regatta title, which marked the most prestigious title in the history of the Drexel women's crew program.
Cheer on Drexel Crew at the 2013 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on May 10 and May 11 at the Drexel Tent located at the finish line on Kelly Drive. For more information about this year's regatta, please visit www.dadvail.org.
