Men's Crew Wins Four Gold Medals at the Kerr Cup

Philadelphia – Drexel Crew earned seven gold medals at the 47th annual Kerr Cup Regatta hosted by the Dragons on the home waters of the Schuylkill River. The men's varsity eight won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the third consecutive year. The men also placed first in the second varsity eight, freshmen eight and lightweight four finals. The women's second varsity eight, varsity four and freshmen eight finished first for Drexel.
Saturday's regatta had boats entered from 18 programs including Bryn Mawr, Dowling College, Fordham, Franklin and Marshall, La Salle, Loyola, New York Maritime, New York University, Philadelphia University, Penn State, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Sarah Lawrence, Stony Brook, Stevens Institute of Technology, US Merchant Marine Academy, Villanova, and Washington College.
The men's varsity eight won the Kerr Cup trophy with a top-time of 5:42.6. The winning Lois Krall boat was led by coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Kurt Linton, Vanja Busic, Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Sebastian Ryan, John Pieper, Michael Faust and bow Casimir Czworkowski. The Dragons crossed the finish line before La Salle, Washington College, Fordham, Villanova and Franklin & Marshall.
The men's second varsity eight stopped the clock at 5:58.6 for first-place. Victoria Kenion coxed the Annette Pennoni along with coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Marko Durica, Milos Rujevic, James Byrne, Ryan Mallgrave, Ian Luetzow, Christian Ladd, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Brian McCabe. The Dragons outlasted La Salle, Washington College, Fordham and Franklin and Marshall.
The men's freshmen eight won the race with a time of 5:38.6. The Vince Vidas shell consisted of coxswain Christopher Henderson, stroke Daniel Dollin, Mikulas Sum, Nicholas Capaldi, Michael DiLucca, Dave Hanrahan, Daniel Palombo, Daniel Pyle and bow Lawrence Lindawan. Together, the Dragons stopped the clock before Saint Joseph's, Fordham, NY Maritime, Richmond and Stony Brook.
The men's lightweight four posted a winning time of 6:50.1. Ariana Kaufmann coxed the Tobey and Kim Oxholm boat with stroke Dean Hill, Adam Cordi, Ethan McCulla and bow Andrew Weinstein. The Dragons placed ahead of Fordham, Villanova, Loyola, New York University and Stony Brook.
The men's varsity four earned second-place with a time of 6:29.9. Philadelphia University posted the fastest time of 6:26.04 for a gold medal. The LeBow College of Business boat included coxswain Diana Fox, stroke Mahmoud Shurbaji, Jake Murphy, Ryan McSpedon and bow Matt Gehret. The Dragons place ahead of two Saint Joseph's shells, Loyola and Penn State.
The women's varsity eight finished second behind Washington College with a time of 6:31.6. The Shoremen won the Lela Kerr Cup with a first-place time of 6:28.8. Kerry Walsh coxed the Marlene Buckley II shell along with stroke Julia Jackson, Alexa Antonioli, Kayla Wroblesky, Mollie Cusack, Amanda O'Malley, Bridget Pfeifer, Jamie Batcher and bow Colleen Delaney past La Salle, Fordham, Philadelphia and Villanova.
The women's second varsity eight won a gold medal with a top-time of 6:46.2. The winning Maria Papadakis boat featured coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Elizabeth Campanella, Emily Gartland, Olivia Babiec, Sierra Baca, Amanda Kleuser, Elizabeth Daugherty, Tori King and bow Elise Levito. The Dragons crossed the finish before Fordham, La Salle and Sarah Lawrence.
The women's freshmen eight stopped the clock first at 6:11.8 for a gold medal. Rachel Bowen coxed the Marlene Buckley shell with stroke Taylor Brady, Julie McGlynn, Jordan Marinchak, Kate Wilchek, Caitlin Bubel, Elisabeth Wagner, Rebecca McCool and Rose Ehrlich. Drexel finished before La Salle, Villanova and Fordham.
The women's varsity four earned a winning time of 7:14.3. The Sandra Lee Sheller boat was led by coxswain Sarah Messenger, stroke Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Kathie Cheng and bow Alyssa Leahy. The shell outlasted opposing crews from Villanova, two Penn State boats, Dowling and Fordham.
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympic in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, April 27 at the Bergen Cup hosted on the Schuylkill River.
