Men's Novice Eight Wins Gold at the Murphy Cup

Cherry Hill, N.J. - Drexel Crew advanced six boats to the finals at the 2013 Murphy Cup Regatta. On the men's side, the novice eight won first-place along with a second-place finish by the varsity eight boat. The men's second varsity eight placed third overall in the finals. For the women, the varsity eight clocked in the top-time in the petite finals. The top second varsity eight boat clocked in the third fastest time, while the novice eight earned fourth in the finals.
The men's varsity eight boat captured a silver medal in the finals with a time of 5:56.06. Virginia stopped the clock at 5:49.75 for first place. The Annette Pennoni boat consisted of coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Sebastian Ryan, Lorenzo Albala, Aleksandar Radovic, John Pieper, Kurt Linton, Ryan Mallgrave, Michael Faust and bow Casimir Czworkowski. Temple finished third followed by Williams, Bucknell and North Carolina.
The men's top second varsity eight, in the Joseph Greipp boat, placed third overall with a time of 6:04.83. Virginia took first-place with a time of 5:59.17 and North Carolina's top shell finished second overall. Coxswain Diana Fox, stroke Marc Durica, Milos Rujevic, James Byrne, Vanja Busic, Ian Luetzow, Christian Ladd, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Brian McCabe crossed the finish line before Bucknell, Williams and Temple.
The men's novice eight earned gold medal with a winning time of 5:57.44. The Peggy Greenawalt boat featured coxswain Christopher Henderson, stroke Daniel Dollin, Mikulas Sum, Nicholas Capaldi, Michael DiLucca, Dave Hanrahan, Daniel Palombo, Daniel Pyle and bow Lawrence Lindawan. Drexel outlasted Virginia, West Point, Delaware and Williams respectively.
On the women's side, the varsity eight boat won the petite finals with a top-time of 6:55.22. The Marlene Buckley included coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Elizabeth Campanella, Alexa Antonioli, Amanda O'Malley, Colleen Delaney, Julia Jackson, Mollie Cusack, Olivia Babiec and bow Bridget Pfeifer. The Dragons clocked in before Rutgers, Connecticut, Colgate, La Salle and Fordham.
The women's top second varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley boat, finished third in the finals stopping the clock at 7:03.65. Navy won the event in 6:58.20, while Buffalo's top boat stopped the clock at 7:03.92 for second place. Coxswain Sarah Messenger, stroke Amanda Kleuser, Elizabeth Daugherty, Jayme Batcher, Emily Gartland, Kayla Wroblesky, Alyssa Leahy, Tori King and bow Elise Levito topped Connecticut, Bucknell and Fordham.
The women's novice eight also recorded a time of 7:22.60 for fourth place in the finals. Lehigh, Navy and Bucknell took the top three spots. Rachel Bowen coxed the John Daskalakis boat along with stroke Rose Ehrlich, Jordan Marinchak, Rebecca McCool, Elisabeth Wagner, Taylor Brady, Ashley Lidwell, Caitlin Bubel and bow Kate Wilchek. The Dragons stopped the clock before Williams and Buffalo.
Drexel Crew will return to the water on Saturday, April 6 at the Bucknell Invitational.
