Pearson, Curran Earn CAA Weekly Awards

RICHMOND, Va. - Rachel Pearson and Sarah Curran were recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association on Monday as the league's Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The awards cap off a big week for the Drexel women's basketball team, which saw the Dragons claim the 2013 St. John's Chartwell's Holiday Classic with wins over St. John's and Prairie View A&M. Pearson was named the Dragons' MVP in the event.
The awards mark the first time since March 3, 2008 that Drexel had both a Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honoree in the same week. That week, Gabriela Marginean was the league's Player of the Week while Jasmina Rosseel was named the Rookie of the Week.
Pearson shares the league's honor with Kirby Burkholder of James Madison, who also was named an MVP of the Holiday Classic after the Dukes also handled Prairie View A&M and St. John's in the pre-set tournament format.
The sophomore out of Archbishop Carroll knocked down 15 points on Saturday in the Dragons' come-from-behind victory over the host Red Storm. It was the second-highest point total of her career, and it was coupled with a personal-best 10 rebounds to make up her first-ever double-double. Pearson nearly duplicated the feat on Sunday against Prairie View, when she finished with 14 points and nine boards. Pearson also added four assists on the weekend, with two apiece in both games to match her career high. She also added her first blocked shot of the season. The honor from the league is the first Player of the Week award in Pearson's career.
Curran, another product of Archbishop Carroll who has started all nine games for Drexel to begin her collegiate career, now leads the team in scoring after putting up 14 against the Johnnies and eight more against Prairie View. Curran also had five assists and eight total rebounds in the two contests. Curran becomes the second Dragon to earn Rookie of the Week distinctions after Alexis Smith earned the award twice in the season's first month.
Drexel will return to action on Wednesday when it plays Hampton at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for its first home game since November 15. The Dragons and Lady Pirates will tip off at 7:00 p.m. Fans in attendance can purchase $1 hot dogs throughout the game.
