Crew Wins Head of the Schuylkill's Overall Points Title for Fourth Straight Year

Philadelphia – Drexel University won the overall team points trophy for the fourth straight year at the 2013 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The Dragons won five medals out of six head races on Saturday. The men's varsity eight, men's and women's second varsity eights and the women's freshmen four shells won gold medals. The women's varsity eight earned third place for a bronze medal, while the men's freshmen eight captured fifth overall.
The men's varsity eight clocked in a first-place time of 13:51.09 out of 15 opposing crews in the men's college and open heavy championship eights final. The Lois Krall shell featured coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Mikulas Sum, Ivo Krakic, Sebastian Ryan, Nicholas Capaldi, Ian Luetzow, John Pieper, Daniel Palombo and bow Dave Hanrahan. The Dragons outlasted Merrimac, Delaware, New York, West Point, Saint Joseph's, Duke, Penn State, Lafayette, and Hamilton.
The Dragons won the top-two spots out of 25 entries in the men's college and open club eights final. The men's top second varsity eight shell won the race in 13:38.86. Christopher Henderson coxed the the winning Antoinette Pennoni boat with stroke Christian Ladd, Xavier Stanish, Dean Hill, Ryan Mallgrave, Marko Durica, Jake Murphy, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Casimir Czworkowski.
The Vince Vidas shell finished second with a time of 14:06.32. The men's second varsity eight 'B' boat was highlighted by coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Ryan McSpedon, Vanja Busic, James Byrne, Cameron Staines, Mahmoud Shurbaji, Daniel Dollin, Matt Gehret and bow Brian McCabe.
Drexel's third second varsity eight shell stopped the clock at 15:57.74 for 21st place. The Joseph Greipp boat was led by coxswain Rio Monte, stroke Robert Greene, Leif Malm, Brian Kissam, John Deibler, Michael Scott, Eric Williams, Ethan McCulla and bow Andrew Weinstein.
The men's freshmen eight 'A' boat recorded fifth place with a time of 14:33.86 out of 23 competitors. Brent Barry coxed the Peggy Greenawalt boat with stroke Tom Foulds, Adam Wisniowski, John Ruskey, James Purtill, Will Cartwright, Nico Arechabala, Dan Capone and bow George Twardy past Delaware, Penn, West Point and Saint Joseph's.
The men's freshmen eight 'B' shell followed in 10th place with a time of 15:16.28. Drexel's Class of '72 shell consisted of coxswain Jackson Beach, stroke Brian Tindall, Jim Howley, Louis Masi, Aengus Walker, Keegan Shannon, Joseph Masgai, Adam Davis and bow Nick Herceg. The Dragons finished before Penn State, Villanova, Duke, Merchant Marine, Princeton, Saint Joseph's, Delaware, Lafayette, Union, West Virginia, Haverford College, Franklin and Marshall, Villanova and Temple.

The Marlene Buckley II boat featured coxswain Kerry Walsh, Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Kayla Wroblesky, Elizabeth Daugherty, Marina Forster, Samantha Cowan, Amanda Kleuser and bow Elise Levito. The Blue and Gold clocked in before Duquesne, Old Dominion, Buffalo, Fordham, Holy Cross, Connecticut, West Point, Washington College, West Virginia, Delaware, Hamilton, Villanova, Temple, La Salle, Penn State, Philadelphia and Lafayette respectively.
The women's second varsity eight shell crossed the finish line first out of 40 entries with a time of 16:18.60 in the women's college and open club eights final. Catherine Hamilton coxed the winning Maria Papadakis boat with stroke Tori King, Kendall Wenzke, Barbara McKenna, Colleen Delaney, Amanda O'Malley, Alyssa Leahy, Stephanie Thomas and bow Julie McGlynn.
The women's second varsity eight 'B' shell registered a time of 17:34.79 for 19th overall the Marlene Buckley shell was highlighted by coxswain Sarah Messenger, stroke Taylor Brady, Emily Gartland, Sierra Baca, Lauren Sand, Gabby Salcedo, Christina Alleva, Crystal Xu and bow Julia Iannucci.
The women's freshmen four also won a gold medal against 24 competing crews. Nupur Parikh guided the Sandra Lee Sheller boat with stroke Hannah Devlin, Molly Dudrear, Emma Cardwell and bow Jenna O'Toole across the finish line in 18:13.90. The Dragons place ahead of Trinity, Catholic University, Temple, Carnegie Mellon, Fordham, Villanova, Penn State, Hamilton, Lafayette, Hofstra, Haverford College, West Point, Bryant, TCNJ, Maryland, West Virginia and Sarah Lawerence.
Former Drexel rowers also returned to the Schuylkill River on Saturday. The women's alumni eight clocked in at 16:53.18 for first place out of 13 shells. The men's alumni eight posted a time of 16:22.49 for 16th overall out of 25 opposing boats.
Drexel men's and women's crew will conclude the fall season on November 9 at the 2013 Frostbite Regatta held on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
