PHILADELPHIA - After a week that saw the Drexel men's soccer team grab two road wins and seize control of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association, two Dragons were honored with weekly awards on Monday, as junior midfielder Michele Pataia was named the CAA's Player of the Week, while freshman goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach earned the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week nod.
Pataia, who earned the Player of the Week award for the second time in his career, had three points in the Dragons' 2-1 win at Delaware on Saturday. Pataia scored Drexel's first goal on a breakaway in the 19th minute of play, then found Nathan Page for the goal that would prove to be the game-winner in the 68th minute. Pataia's three points gives him four on the season, and marked his first three-plus point output since scoring two goals against No. 11 Old Dominion on September 22, 2012. He was also named the CAA Player of the Week after that performance.
Afflerbach posted his fifth shutout on Wednesday evening when the Dragons blanked UNCW, 2-0. The freshman from Harleysville, Pa. was called upon to make a career-high eight saves in the win over the Seahawks. He also added four saves, allowing just one goal, in Drexel's win at Delaware. That win was the first home loss for the Blue Hens this season, and coupled with a William & Mary win against Northeastern, left the Dragons as the only unbeaten team remaining in CAA play.
Drexel has four games left, beginning on Tuesday with its last non-conference match of the regular season. The Dragons will visit Maryland on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Terps, who lost in the national semifinal last season, were ranked No. 4 in the nation this season last week before splitting a pair of games. Drexel will also visit James Madison later this week on Saturday night before returning home for Senior Night on October 30 against Hofstra.
