Women's Soccer Defeats Hofstra for First Conference Win
10/13/2013 3:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the season as they defeated Hofstra, 2-1, on Senior Day. Seniors Jess Sarkisian, Andi Stampone, and Christine Stevenson were honored prior to the game. With the win, the Dragons improve to 5-9-1, 1-4 CAA while the Pride moves to 8-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA.
Drexel had a few chances to score in the first half, including a shot from Megan Hammaker that was deflected off Hofstra's keeper and went just over the crossbar 15 minutes into the game. The Dragons were able to keep the Pride from making an attempt at the goal throughout the whole first half as they outshot Hofstra, 8-0. Despite these eight shots, both teams went into halftime scoreless.
Hammaker made another attempt just after the second half began that went high. The Pride made an effort just minutes later as Leah Galton took Hofstra's first shot of the game in the 47th minute on a breakaway drive that got a piece of the post to prevent a goal. In the 55th minute, senior Christine Stevenson sent a corner kick deep into the box, where after much contention for the ball Hammaker was able to sink it into the net to get the Dragons on the board first.
Eight minutes later the Pride got their revenge as Leah Galton scored off a double assist from Brittany Farriella and Ruby Staplehurst to tie the score at 1-1. One minute later, Drexel took back the lead as Lauren Stollar found the rebound of a shot by Civanni Moss and put it back for the game-winning goal. The Dragons' defense held the Pride scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn Drexel's first conference win of the season.
Junior keeper Eve Badana made six saves in the victory, while Hofstra goalie Emily Morphitis recorded five.
With their home schedule now complete, the Dragons will hit the road to take on conference rival Delaware next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
