CLEAR Athletes of the Week: Saavedra and Thahryamal

Philadelphia – Xabier Saavedra (Mexico City, Mexico/Nordoff/Weil Prep) of men's tennis and Disha Thahryamal (Jaipur, India/Mayo College Girls' School) of women's squash have been named CLEAR Athletes of the Week from Monday, January 28 through February 3 by Drexel Athletics.
Freshman Xabier Saavedra won his first match of the spring against Lehigh, earning the Dragons' lone point in a 6-1 loss with his 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Saavedra also was part of a sweeping victory over St. Francis (N.Y.), putting together a dominant performance over Evan Vrsuljko in the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Disha Thahryamal went 3-0 on the weekend, helping the Drexel women's squash team win the Smith Round Robin with victories over Smith, Connecticut College and William Smith. Thahryamal played at No. 4 in the Dragons' first match of the weekend with a 9-0 win over Smith. There, she handled business to the tune of an 11-5, 11-1, 11-1 victory in straight sets. All three of her wins on the weekend would come in three sets. At No. 6 against Connecticut College, Thahryamal won 11-6, 11-5, 11-0. Finally, she dispatched of William Smith's No. 6 player in three sets on Sunday, 11-3, 11-3, 11-2.
Drexel Tennis will return to action on February 10 as the Dragons host Morgan State with matches set to begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Drexel Armory. The women's tennis team will visit Saint Peter's on Tuesday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. before the home match against the Bears. The men's and women's squash teams will visit George Washington at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2.
