Massenat's 50-Footer at Buzzer Gives Dragons Win at Hofstra

Hempstead, N.Y. - Frantz Massenat's desperation three-pointer at the buzzer from approximately 50 feet gave Drexel a 55-52 win at Hofstra. It was Drexel's second straight win and evened the team's CAA record at 3-3.
Hofstra tied the game with just 5.9 seconds remaining when Taran Buie nailed his seventh three-pointer of the game to even it up a 52-52. Hofstra called time and when play resumed pressured the Dragons. Massenat appeared to lose the ball, but got it back, slipped through a trap and heaved a two-hander the length of the court. The ball went through the net as time expired and the Dragons escaped with the win.
The Dragons (7-11, 3-3 CAA) led in the early stages of the second half but trailed most of the final 20 minutes. Hofstra (5-14, 2-4) took the lead when Buie nailed a three-pointer at the 13 minute mark and after a turnover led to a David Imes' bucket, Hofstra led 39-36. That lead would extend to as many as eight points as the Dragons went a span of 6:14 without a point. The drought was finally broken by a Damion Lee lay-up. Drexel's defense clamped down after that and the Dragons answered with a 14-2 run of their own to take the lead. Lee hit a three to tie it, Daryl McCoy scored on a put back and a Frantz Massenat jumper put the Dragons up 50-46. Buie banged a three to cut it to one, but Drexel answered with two free throws from Massenat. The Dragons defense held, but a turnover after a stop gave Hofstra and Buie the chance to tie it.
Drexel ended the first half on 8-2 run, keyed by three-pointers by Massenat and Lee, and led 28-25 at the break. The half was a defensive struggle as both teams shot less than 40 percent and committed 15 combined turnovers, nine by the Pride.
Massenat and Lee each scored 14 points, but Drexel's two leading scorers combined to shoot just eight for 24 from the field. Dartaye Ruffin added nine points and eight rebounds. Drexel shot 41 percent from the floor in an evenly contested game. Hofstra shot 42 percent and each team had 32 rebounds. Buie had 29 points and tied a Hofstra record with seven three-pointers.
Drexel returns home for a brief two game homestand beginning on Saturday. The Dragons will host Georgia State on Saturday at noon and play Delaware on Monday night at 7 p.m.
