Philadelphia – Fabio Machado (Leominster, Mass./Leominster/Burlington County College) of men's soccer and Amanda Fleischut (Doylestown, Pa./ Central Bucks West) of field hockey have been named CLEAR Athletes of the Week by Drexel Athletics.
Sophomore Fabio Machado played a long pass perfectly to the foot of Ken Tribbett, setting up the game's lone goal as Drexel won its home opener over Lehigh, 1-0. Machado now has four assists and a goal on the season for a team-leading six points in his first season as a Dragon. He has points in all four games the Dragons have played thus far this year, leading the way for a balanced offensive attack that has seen seven different players score eight goals on the season.
Senior captain Amanda Fleischut tallied two goals and three assists in the Dragons' three-game road trip on the West Coast. Fleischut started the Dragons' six-goal rally in the opening six minutes of play against UC Davis. She followed with an assist to teammate Christina Conrad and continued to set the tone on offense in the Dragons' 6-0 shutout against the Aggies. On Friday night, Fleischut's goal tied the game, 1-1, in the first half against No. 22 California. In the eighth minute of overtime, the Doylestown, Pa. native fed a pass to Mary Lynam who scored the game-winning goal giving Drexel a 3-2 win over the Golden Bears. The victory marked Drexel's fifth-straight win to start the season. In the final game on Sunday, Fleischut dished the ball to Kristen Focht off of a penalty corner to tie the score, 1-1, with No. 16 Stanford. The Dragons were unable to overcome a late second half goal by the Cardinal, suffering their first loss of the season, 2-1. She is now second on the team in points with seven.
The Drexel men's soccer team travels to Lafayette on Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. Field Hockey will also visit the Leopards on Friday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m.
