PHILADELPHIA - With the 2012 season set to get underway tomorrow evening, the Drexel men's soccer team has welcomed Ryan Platt on board as a new assistant coach. Platt arrived prior to the fall training camp after completing a highly successful playing career at Georgia Southern last year.
A standout goalkeeper during his playing career, Platt will mentor the Dragons' three keepers this season. Platt began his career at Nazareth College, a Division III school, where he earned All-Conference honors as a sophomore and was six times named the league's Player of the Week during his two years there. He had six shutouts in Nazareth's first nine games during the 2009 season before transferring to Georgia Southern, where he completed his playing career.
Platt's 2009 season with Nazareth remains one of the greatest in NCAA history. His .923 save percentage ranks him 12th all-time amongst Division III goalkeepers for a single season, and 14th across all NCAA divisions. Last season, as a senior at Georgia Southern, Platt finished ninth in Division I with 5.53 saves per game, finishing with a .761 save percentage.
While Platt becomes the newest member of head coach Doug Hess' staff, the Dragons will retain Cory Robertson as a key part of the coaching staff. Robertson, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Dragons, now serves as a volunteer assistant coach. A 2008 graduate of Drexel and a 2007 All-CAA performer in goal, Robertson worked with the men's and women's teams while acting as a graduate assistant, coaching the goalkeepers. Last season, Robertson worked closely with both Pentti Pussinen and Eve Badana, each of whom have played for their national teams and each of whom received All-CAA recognition last fall. Robertson posted 17 shutouts during his playing days with the Dragons, and was sixth in the nation as a junior with a 0.54 goals against average.
