Philadelphia — The NCAA has announced that the Drexel University women's basketball and women's tennis teams have received the NCAA's Academic Performance Program public recognition award. The award is given to teams that posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sports.
The women's basketball team, which advanced to the Second Round of the WNIT, earned the award for the fourth straight season. Head Coach Denise Dillon's team was the only women's basketball program in the Colonial Athletic Association to earn the honor. The women's tennis team won the award for the third straight time. Drexel and Delaware were the only two CAA institutions in the top 10 in women's tennis.
In the six years the NCAA has honored school's for multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all teams, Drexel has had five teams recognized a total of 13 times. The men's and women's basketball teams have received recognition four times. As noted, the women's team won the award three times, while the field hockey and men's golf teams have also been honored.
Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
