Six Rowers Selected to Philadelphia Inquirer’s Academic All-Area Teams

Philadelphia – Lorenzo Albala (Elkins Park, Pa./ Boston Latin), Randall Lee (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./ William Tennent), Kevin Rorabaugh (Mount Joy, Pa./ Donegal) and Brian Timlin (Aston, Pa./ Sun Valley) of men's crew along with Elizabeth Bratton (Philadelphia, Pa./ Saint Basil) and Emily Coyle (Oceanport, N.J./ Academy of Allied Health and Science) of women's crew were named to the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer's Academic All-Area team. The Dragons were among 18 student-athletes that have earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
Albala and Lee are members of the men's varsity eight boat that had one of the most successful spring seasons in Drexel's history. The men's eight earned its first-ever team bid to the IRA National Championships and will be the first-ever Drexel's men's eight to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta this June. The duo helped guide the Lois Krall boat to a bronze medal finish at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and helped Drexel Crew win second place overall with 35 total points. The shell won the Bergen Cup and Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup for the second consecutive year. Albala and Lee helped the men's eight earn a silver medal at the Knecht Cup and place fourth in the grand finals at the San Diego Crew Classic. The boat also finished third in the grand finals at the 2012 Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta.
Rorabaugh and Timlin rowed in the men's second varsity eight boat. The shell finished fourth in the finals at the prestigious 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. The men's second varsity placed first at the Bergen Cup and finished second behind Drexel's top men's eight boat at the Kerr Cup. Rorabaugh and Timlin helped the boat win a gold medal at the Knecht Cup.
Bratton, two-time All-CAA honoree, and Coyle sat in the women's varsity eight boat for Drexel. The women's eight placed first in the petite finals at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and finished fifth at the CAA Championships. Bratton and Coyle helped the shell win the Lela Kerr Cup, for the second straight year, and the Kelly Cup. The women's eight also took fifth place in the petite finals at the Knecht Cup and placed fourth in the third finals at the San Diego Crew Classic.
The four men's rowers selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Rowing team were joined by St. Joseph's Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart as well as Andrew McGrath, Hurst Nuckols and Grant Wilson from Penn. Bratton and Coyle were joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Rowing team by Kelly Burke of Penn, Saint Joseph's Bridget Dempsey and Ariana McDevitt, Kara Jackson and Joanna Sutor from Temple and Bryn Mawr's Stephanie Martin and Brie Stark.
The Academic All-Area teams are selected by members of the sports information offices of the 28 institutions across the Philadelphia metropolitan area in partnership with the Philadelphia Inquirer. Albala is majoring in biomedical engineering and Lee is a biological science major. Rorabaugh is majoring in architecture, while Timlin is majoring in business administration. On the women's side, Bratton and Coyle are both majoring in health sciences.
