Philadelphia – The National Strength and Conditioning Association has awarded Drexel University student-athletes Amanda Fleischut of field hockey, Kyle Frey of wrestling, Derrick Thomas of men's basketball and Steph Uecker of women's swimming and diving with its annual All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award. These athletes are also recognized for their dedication and understanding of strength training and conditioning. The 33rd annual award program is sponsored by Power Systems, Inc.

She finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association in shots per game, tied for fifth in shots, sixth in goals per game, tied for sixth in goals and ninth in points per game. The junior standout also received first team honors by the Colonial Athletic Association and the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region Team.
“Amanda is a true testament to her team inside and outside of the weight room,” added Drexel's Assistant Strength Coach John Sheffield. “She gives 100% every time she trains. Her extra effort and dedication to improving has not only helped her tremendously, but resulted in her selection to the NFHCA Division I All-Region Second Team.”
Redshirt senior Kyle Frey (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) won three major decisions finishing 19-5 overall, 11-1 in duals and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association at 285 pounds. He was one of three Dragons to qualify for the NCAA tournament after placing second as a heavyweight at the CAA Championships. Frey finished first at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational and fifth at the Matt Town Invitational. The team had 17 total pins on the season.
“Kyle is a true competitor in the fullest sense,” noted Drexel's Assistant Strength Coach Stephen Maze. “He demonstrates great leadership and dedication on the wrestling mat and in the varsity weight room. Kyle possesses a strong passion and drive to continually get better each and every training session. He displays unyielding commitment and hard work ethic toward his physical preparation each session. Kyle truly understands the tremendous benefits of his strength and conditioning program and is always looking to gain a competitive edge through his training.”
Junior guard Derrick Thomas (New York, N.Y./St. John's College High School) averaged 8.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for the Dragons. He is also one of our top on-ball defenders regularly guarding the opponent's top perimeter threat. In the weight room, Derrick does an outstanding job leading by example.”
Junior Steph Uecker (Oakland, Maine/ Messalonskee) was the third fastest flyer on the women's swim team this year and dropped over three seconds in her 100 fly with a time of 59.10 this season. Her work ethic and determination took her to the next level allowing her to cut a full second in her 50 free and six seconds in her 200 fly times.
“Steph is an extremely hardworking and focused athlete,” said Rankin. “She consistently goes above and beyond what she has to do to get better.”
The NSCA awarded 225 collegiate and high school athletes across 90 schools with this well-regarded award. “The advantage of strength training and conditioning cannot be denied in collegiate and high school athletics,” said Alan Kinniburgh, NSCA's Executive Director. “These student-athletes attest to this understanding and are applauded for their hard work and dedication.”
