BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Drexel women's tennis team put together a strong showing in their match at Lehigh on Sunday afternoon, defeating the host Mountain Hawks, 6-1. The Dragons swept the doubles matches and won five of six singles points, only falling after the overall match was already decided. The men's team, meanwhile, battled but fell to Lehigh, 7-0.
The top doubles team of Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa were first to finish, playing a focused, tight match that saw them pull away with an 8-1 victory. Elise Leizerovich and Marcela Rosales were next, recovering from an early 3-0 deficit to win at No. 2 and clinch the doubles poitn, 8-4. Emma Brook and Nicole Pivonka completed the sweep at No. 3, winning 8-4.
With Stosic unavailable for singles play, the rest of the Dragons were moved up a spot from their normal positions, and did not disappoint. First to finish for the Dragons was Aysenil Orhon, who won her match at No. 6, 6-2, 6-4. It was Orhon's first dual match of the spring season.
Moved into the No. 1 position, Mafa stepped up and played with what her coach referred to as "tremendous focus from first to last point." After a tense first set that was decided by one service break by Mafa, 6-4, she dispatched her opponent quickly in the second, winning 6-4, 6-1.
Rosales continued her solid play at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-1.
Alex Bell continued to perform well in singles, playing at the No. 4 spot and winning, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. She recovered from a difficult second set to find her game in the third, showing outstanding fighting spirit throughout.
Pivonka made it a 6-1 final score with her 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. She was down 5-2 early in the first set before refocusing and turning the match around, at one point winning eight consecutive games.
On the men's side, Lehigh was able to take care of the Dragons, sweeping the doubles matches and all six singles points. Paul Stauskas put up one of the stronger fights on the men's side, falling at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Skyler Davis went up 4-1 early in his first set at No. 4 before falling, 6-4, 6-1.
