Rachel Pearson Named CAA Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. - On Friday night as the Drexel women's basketball team was racing to a 36-point victory over UMKC in the first round of the LIU Turkey Classic, freshman guard Rachel Pearson did something no Drexel freshman has done in nearly six years. Pearson, who has appeared in every game for the Dragons as they have made their way to a 4-1 start, scored 19 points in the victory, the most for a Drexel freshman since Gabriela Marginean had 28 in a win over Georgia State in the first round of the CAA Tournament on March 8, 2007. For that performance, Pearson was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Week.
A graduate of Archbishop Carroll and a high school teammate of current Drexel teammates Meghan Creighton and Hollie Mershon, Pearson came off the bench to lead all scorers with those 19 points in the Dragons' 76-40 win over UMKC. She was 7-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6 from three-point range. In fact, she could easily have been 7-for-8 from downtown had two long jumpers not been taken with her foot on the three-point line.
Now averaging 5.6 points per game for the season, Pearson became the first Dragon to win a CAA Rookie of the Week award since Kamile Nacickaite on January 4, 2009. She added two assists and a steal in the win over UMKC, then had three points and an assist in the Dragons' 51-33 victory over Colgate in the LIU Turkey Classic championship game.
Pearson and the Dragons will return to action on Wednesday when they head to South Carolina to take on the 7-0 Gamecocks. That game tips off at 7:00 p.m.
