Dragons Fall to St. Mary's in Anaheim Classic

Anaheim, Calif, – Matthew Dellavedova scored 32 points as St. Mary's defeated Drexel, 76-64, in the first round of the DirecTV Classic in Anaheim. The Gaels remained undefeated at 5-0 , while the Dragons fell to 1-3.
St. Mary's, one of only five teams in the nation to win at least 25 games in each of the last five years, shot 54 percent from the floor and made 19 of their first 20 free throws in defeating the Dragons.
Frantz Massenat led Drexel with 17 points. The junior was 6-for-15 from the floor. Tavon Allen, making his first collegiate start, scored a career-high 16 points. He had a pair of three-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the line. Dartaye Ruffin added 12 points. Daryl McCoy led Drexel with eight rebounds.
St. Mary's Dellavedova, the starting point guard on Australia's Olympic Team this past summer, was 10-for-16 from the floor and made 10 of his 12 free throw attempts. Brad Waldow added 15 points. The Gaels were the first team to outrebound the Dragons this season, grabbing 32 boards to just 12 for Drexel. The Dragons played without Damion Lee and Chris Fouch. Lee is day-to-day, while Fouch is out for the season.
Drexel will play its second game of the three-game tournament on Friday afternoon. The Dragons will play Xavier at the Anaheim Convention Center at 3 p.m. local time, 6 p.m. in Philadelphia. The team will have an off-day on Saturday and conclude the tournament on Sunday afternoon.
