Philadelphia – Drexel sophomore Eve Badana was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year at the 2012 CAA Awards Banquet held at the Williamsburg Hospitality House. Drexel Head Coach Ray Goon, who led the Dragons to a 13-3-2 record in 2012 was named the CAA's Coach of the Year. In addition, Melissa Chapman was named a First Team All-CAA performer, Sam Greenfield was named to the Second Team and Gabby Dixon was a member of the league's All-Rookie Team.
Badana, a sophomore goalkeeper, had an outstanding season in goal for the Dragons. She set a Drexel school record with 10 shutouts, including six in conference play. Badana led the CAA with a 0.67 goals against average and was third in the league with an .836 save percentage. She was a First Team All-CAA pick after being named to the CAA Second Team as a freshman last year.
Chapman, a sophomore from Lansdale, Pa., emerged as one of the top defensive players in the league in only her second season. She was a key part of Drexel's defense which allowed a CAA-low 12 goals and only six of those in conference play. Chapman also scored three goals, including a game-winner and one that tied a game late. Chapman and Badana are the first Drexel teammates ever named to the CAA First Team in the same season.
Greenfield, a junior, leads the team in scoring with five goals and 11 points. The tri-captain scored four game-winning goals for the Dragons, including one with just 2:16 to play to give the Dragons a 1-0 win against Delaware in the regular-season finale. Greenfield, a leader by example with a tireless work rate, is a solid two-way performer who organizes the defense in the midfield. She was an All-CAA Rookie Team selection in 2010.
Dixon, a first-year player from Granby, Conn., came off the bench in 17 matches as a rookie. She scored three goals and was second on the team with nine points. Dixon also tied Alex Vazquez for the team lead with three assists.
Goon picked up his first CAA Coach of the Year award. His squad set school records for wins in a season and CAA wins with seven. The Dragons were picked to finish seventh in the CAA this year, but went 7-2-1 in conference play to finish just two points out of first place.
The Dragons are the No. 2 seed in the CAA Championship. Drexel will face UNCW at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Virginia. The winner will advance to play either Hofstra or William & Mary the CAA championship game on Sunday afternoon.
